Canada Express Entry, Explained: How the System Actually Works

Canada Express Entry immigration

Express Entry is not a visa — it is Canada's online system for ranking skilled-worker candidates and inviting the highest-scoring ones to apply for permanent residence. Understanding how the ranking works is the difference between waiting in the pool and receiving an invitation.

The three programs under Express Entry

Express Entry manages three federal programs. The Federal Skilled Worker Program suits applicants with foreign work experience. The Canadian Experience Class is for people who have already worked in Canada — often after studying there. The Federal Skilled Trades Program covers qualified tradespeople. You enter one pool; your profile is matched to whichever program fits.

How the CRS score works

Every candidate receives a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score out of 1,200. The core points come from four factors:

  • Age — maximum points in your late twenties, tapering after 30
  • Education — more points for master's degrees, verified through an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA)
  • Language — IELTS or CELPIP results converted to CLB levels; CLB 9+ unlocks major skill-transferability bonuses
  • Work experience — skilled experience, especially Canadian experience, compounds with language scores

On top of the core score, a provincial nomination adds 600 points — effectively a guaranteed invitation — and category-based draws for healthcare, STEM, trades and French speakers can invite lower overall scores in targeted occupations.

What happens after an invitation

Once invited, you have 60 days to submit a complete application with proof of funds, police certificates and medicals. Most complete applications are processed in about six months. The single biggest mistake we see is entering the pool with an unpolished profile: your score is calculated from what you can prove on entry, so credentials, language results and reference letters should be perfected first.
