What IELTS Score Do You Actually Need? Country-by-Country Requirements

"What IELTS score do I need?" is the question we hear most — and the honest answer is that the minimum score and the competitive score are rarely the same number. Here is how to think about it, destination by destination.

Canada

For Express Entry, language is scored via CLB levels. CLB 7 (roughly 6.0 in each band) is the entry requirement for the Federal Skilled Worker Program — but CLB 9 (8.0 listening, 7.0 in the rest) unlocks the skill-transferability bonuses that can add dozens of CRS points. For study permits, most colleges ask for overall 6.0–6.5 with no band below 6.0.

United Kingdom

UK student visas generally require CEFR B2, which most universities interpret as overall 6.0–6.5. Competitive master's programs often ask 6.5–7.0 with no band below 6.0. Skilled Worker visas require B1 — but employers usually expect far better in practice.

Australia

Skilled migration awards points in steps: "Competent" English (6.0 across bands) earns zero points, "Proficient" (7.0) earns 10, and "Superior" (8.0) earns 20. For a points-tested visa, the jump from 6.5 to 7.0 in every band is often the cheapest 10 points available to you.

Germany, Ireland and New Zealand

English-taught German programs typically ask 6.0–6.5. Irish universities mirror the UK at 6.0–6.5 overall. New Zealand's Skilled Migrant Category requires 6.5 overall, and its study visas follow institution requirements around 6.0.

Aim for the score that changes your outcome

  • Check the band-by-band requirement, not just the overall — one weak band can sink an application
  • Identify the threshold where your points or program options jump
  • Book your test only when mock tests consistently hit that target

Our coaching starts with a diagnostic and a target tied to your actual visa plan — so you sit the test once, hit the number that matters, and move on.
